The Paul Bunyan State Trail begins in Crow Wing State Park in Brainerd and runs all the way to Lake Bemidji State Park near Bemidji. It is popular for snowmobiling in the winter, as well as biking, hiking and in-line skating in the warmer months.

One of the more popular cities along the trail is Brainerd, the trailhead. Brainerd is long-known for its scenic lakes and rivers, which are popular for boating, kayaking and canoeing. Golf and racing is also popular in Brainerd, and Brainerd International Raceway is home to the Lucas Oil Nationals racing event.
